Former priory and home of the poet Lord Byron is said to be haunted by several different ghosts. It was built aroundd 1170A.D. and later bought by Sir John Byron. It remained in the Byron family for over 300 yrs. According to superstition, turning a religious house into a secular one is a recepit for misfortune and over the years, the Byron family had more than its share of bad luck and declining fortune. The romantic poet Lord Byron(1788-1824) was the last of his family to own the house. When it was given to Lord Byron, the house was in terrible disrepair. His father, known as the "wicked Lord", lived and died alone in the scullery, the only room that was intact against water. In 1817, Byron went ot venice and sold the property.
